Rising Stars: Joseph Patterson

25 02 2020

Joseph Patterson, a journalist and entrepreneur, is attempting to change the landscape of British media, ensuring black British music and culture is covered by conventional outlets ‘in the right way’.

Having launched a series of live events in 2007, where artists such as Mercury Prize-winning rapper Skepta performed, Patterson developed a passion for writing after blogging about the shows, and went on to become editor of MTV UK’s blog The Wrap Up and later the senior editor of youth media title Complex UK. Having established himself as a prominent champion of grime and UK rap he went on to co-found TRENCH, a digital and print platform paying homage to black British music and culture, past and present. Forbes has claimed ‘With people like Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson at the forefront, music journalism is in good hands’. TRENCH plans to expand with the launch of a YouTube series, as well as a music compilation, later this year.
